What comes in each kit?

Each kit comes with all the dry shelf stable ingredients, specialty tools, video tutorials and pdf instructions you'll need to complete each project. Each kit also has a cupcake holder that comes with it so you can convert your kit box into a handy cupcake carrier.

You can find a detailed description of what is in each kit on the product page under "What's Inside."

Will I need any fresh ingredients?

Yes, just like a box cake mix you get at the store, you will need a couple fresh ingredients. Typically this is butter, eggs, milk and sometimes vegetable oil. This not only gives our products a long shelf life, making them perfect for gifting or keeping on hand, but it also allows you to easily adapt the recipe to suit dairy-free or vegan diets.

Will I need any additional tools besides what comes in the kit?

Basic kitchen tools you'll need:

  • a few mixing bowls
  • a whisk
  • a spatula
  • a baking tray

Highly recommended but not necessary:

  • a mesh strainer
  • a stand mixer or hand mixer

How long do the cupcakes last? Do they need to be refrigerated?

You do not necessarily need to refrigerate the cupcakes, but it may make them last longer. Keep them in an air tight container on the counter for 2-3 days or in the fridge for up to 4 days. Keep in mind a warm or hot kitchen could make the buttercream more melty. Remove from fridge for 30 minutes before consuming for the best flavor and texture.

Can I buy individual items separately?

We do not sell kit items individually, however, you can add on to your kit a piping kit "expansion pack" to make it easier to share the activity with a friend.

How many people can use the kit. Is it enough for two people?

Foxiecakes kits are great for sharing! Each kit makes 12 cupcakes. One kit can be enjoyed by two people together sharing tools. Want to make sharing even easier? Add a piping kit "expansion pack" to your order. Each expansion pack includes an extra set of decorating tools, so more friends can join the fun!

Is the kit suitable for kids?

Foxiecakes kits require some fine motor skills, so they're best suited for kids and teens who enjoy detailed activities. Many young bakers, especially those with some experience, will absolutely love them!

What if my cupcakes #cakefail?

Oh no, we're so sorry to hear things didn't go as planned! Baking can be a bit of a science, and sometimes experiments don't turn out perfectly. But remember, the joy of baking is in the process itself! We hope you still had fun creating. For tips on troubleshooting common baking issues, check out our Tips & Tricks section – it's full of helpful advice for those little baking mishaps. And remember, frosting is amazing at covering up any little imperfections. 😉

Are Foxiecakes kits perishable?

Foxiecakes kits are shelf stable for several months, so no rush in using! Check the best by date on the back of the kit for guidance.

I'm a total newbie, is it actually easy to make a Foxiecakes kit?

Absolutely! Foxiecakes kits are designed to be beginner friendly and suitable for crafters and bakers of all skill levels. So even if you're a total newbie, there's a kit perfect for you!

We have two levels of kits:

Beginner Kits: These are perfect for those new to baking and decorating. They feature 1 single flower design that is beginner friendly

Intermediate Kits: These kits offer a bit more of a challenge with multiple flower designs and additional techniques. If you have previous experience cake decorating, you may be able to jump right to intermediate kits!

Ingredients & allergens

We use no artificial colors or flavors or GMOs. Our flour is unbleached and our cocoa fair trade. Our kits contain no dairy and no animal products, so that the recipes can be made dairy-free or vegan if desired. At this time, all of our products contain wheat.

Please be advised that while we take precautions to prevent cross-contamination, our facility processes foods that contain wheat, eggs, milk, soy, tree nuts, peanuts, fish, and shellfish. Therefore, there is a risk of cross-contact with these allergens in all of our products.

For a full list of ingredients, please refer to the product page.

What are in your plant-based colors?

Our plant-based powder colors come from ingredients such as turmeric, beet powder, black cocoa, beta carotene (from fungi!), and spirulina (an algae!). Powder colors have a carrier for the active color ingredient which makes them easier to use, typically non-gmo maltodextrin, and usually some kind of citric acid or other natural preservative.

Are your kits vegan or gluten-free?

Our kits are completely vegan as they come. You have the choice of adding regular butter and eggs, or keeping them vegan by using substitutes. Please note that we don't currently offer any gluten-free options.

Do you have dairy-free or vegan substitution suggestions?

We've tested many vegan substitutes. Check out this reel on our IG to see what we recommend!

What payments methods do you accept?

We make paying easy! You can use any major credit or debit card, and we also accept Shop Pay and PayPal.

Will I get an order confirmation?

After you place your order, you'll get a confirmation email. It usually arrives within 15 minutes, but sometimes it might sneak into your spam or junk folder, so be sure to check there too!

Should I use salted or unsalted butter?

Unsalted butter is generally preferred for baking and what you will need for our kits. We have already measured the correct ratio of salt into our cake and frosting mixes for you.

What milk should I use?

We prefer whole milk to give the cake moisture, structure and flavor. If you need vegan, a higher fat non-dairy milk like coconut or oat milk.

Help! My buttercream is too melty/soft/hard!

We get it! Proper buttercream texture for piping can be one of the biggest challegnes for learning to pipe frosting flowers and has a tiny bit of a learning curve.

Our first & BIGGEST tip: a warm kitchen makes for a melty buttercream experience. For best results, we recommend a two-stage approach. Bake your cupcakes and let them (and your kitchen) cool completely before making the frosting. You can even split the process over two days – baking one day and frosting the next!

On to our frosting tips!

Too soft or melty buttercream is a common cake decorating woe! Here's what might be happening and how to fix it:

  • Butter Temperature: Your butter needs to be at the correct temperature. Ideally, it should be softened but still slightly cool to the touch. If it's too warm or melted, the buttercream won't emulsify properly. Leave out of the fridge for 20-30 minutes.
  • Room Temperature: If your kitchen is too warm, your buttercream will soften. Try chilling the buttercream in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it firms up. Don't chill it for too long or it will become too hard to work with.
  • Warm Hands on Piping Bag: Warm hands can be a problem for buttercream piping because they transfer heat to the buttercream, causing it to soften or even melt. This can happen to anyone, so if you feel the piped frosting is not holding its shape well or the frosting is getting shiny, pop the bag into the fridge for a few minutes. Don't leave it too long or the frosting will get too hard to pipe out.
  • Too Much Liquid: Too much milk or other liquid can make your buttercream too soft. If this is the case, try adding our "To the Rescue Powder", one tablespoon at a time, to thicken it.
  • Type of Butter: Some butters have a higher water content than others. European-style butters often have a lower water content and can make a more stable buttercream.

Conversely, if your frosting is too stiff/hard or has jagged edges, it may need the opposite treatment. This can happen if your butter is too cold, it hasn't been whipped enough, or it's lacking sufficient liquid. To fix this:

  • Room Temperature: Let your butter sit out of the fridge to reach room temperature for 20-30 minutes. This may happen faster or slower depending on the heat of your kitchen. The butter should be softened but still cool to the touch.
  • Whipping: Ensure you whip the frosting sufficiently. This incorporates air, making it lighter and smoother.
  • Liquid: Add a tiny amount of liquid (milk or non-dairy milk), a teaspoon at a time, while whipping, until you achieve the desired consistency. Be careful not to add too much, or your frosting will become too thin.

Why did my cupcakes sink? Or why do they look flat or bubbly?

Theres a few reasons why your Foxiecakes cupcakes might have sunk: Common culprits include overmixing the batter, an incorrect oven temperature, opening the oven door too early or underbaking. High altitude can also be a factor. Getting to know your oven and understanding when to stop mixing are key to baking success.

Additionally, cheap butter with a high water content can contribute to cake rising improperly. Butter plays a crucial role in the structure of a cake. 1 The fat in butter helps create air pockets during creaming, contributing to a light and fluffy texture. High water content means less fat, which can lead to a dense, heavy cake that doesn't rise properly. For best results use a higher quality or European style butter.

Don't worry if your first few attempts aren't perfect – baking is a skill that develops with practice!

How do I know when it's baked?

Use the cake tester we included! If it comes out clean, the cake is likely done. You can also gently touch the top – it should spring back lightly. Look for golden brown edges that pull away from the pan. You can start checking a few minutes before the recipe's time, as ovens vary, but remember not to open the oven to early or for too long or you'll let all the heat out.

What adjustments do I need to make if baking at high altitude?

High altitude baking is tricky due to lower air pressure. This makes liquids evaporate faster (drying out baked goods) and gases expand more (causing cakes to rise too quickly then collapse).

Increase oven temp by 15-25°F, decrease baking time by 3-5 minutes for one dozen cupcakes. For our recipes that need 20-24 minutes, start checking for doneness around the 15-17 minute mark. Always use a cake tester or toothpick to be sure!
